MENGO
HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY DEPARTMENT
FUNCTIONS
-
To conduct meditation services for all
hospital occupants.
-
To create a patient to patient ministry.
-
To arrange periodical missions for encouraging
people spiritually as well as fishing for the lost souls.
-
To prepare seminars for spiritual growth and
concern.
SERVICES
Sunday services are being held in the Chapel whereby occupants including a few
patients and their attendants who take part. The same applies to Rubaga Hospital where the Chaplain of Mengo Hospital is assigned responsibility for the
Anglican Communion members. In addition, sacraments of Holy Communion and
Baptism are carried out in both hospitals.
The Chaplain of Rubaga Hospital comes to Mengo Hospital to attend to the
Catholics. A place is accorded to them to hold a service every Sunday. He goes
to the wards as well.
In Mengo Hospital there are even staff meditation services both in the Chapel and in
various departments which involve the members to witness.
Mengo Hospital has a Sunday School for
about 40 children who are nurtured as they grow in their faith.
WARD SERVICES
-
Ward services are held daily using the public
address system everyday in the morning and evening. This is voluntary work
which
is done mainly by hospital staff.
-
The Chaplain with some few volunteers still
move from patient to patient to encourage and comfort them and their
attendants. It is ensured that each patient is at least ministered to once.
-
On the second and fourth Sunday every month
there is a revival group (the re-awakened brethren) that carry out a patient
to patient ministry too.
In such a process we praise the Lord that many
souls are touched and some commit themselves to the Lord as Saviour. Those who
come when already saved get the challenge of being called to witness in
Hospitals as God gathers in many people who cannot be reached easily in other
places.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
-
A Singles’ Conference is held once a year for
the un-married occupants to strength them.
-
Hospital Missions are arranged every year with
a specific theme which involve outside preachers in the wards as well as
ministering to the staff members in departments and Open Air Sessions whereby
even visitors are welcome. Many people get saved through them.
-
There is the Uganda Hospital Health Christian
Care Fellowship wing in Mengo Hospital that caters for
the saved ones.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
-
We praise the Lord for the building of the
Mengo Hospital Centenary Chapel which was a donation by Friends of Mengo U.K.
and U.S.A. in recognition of 100 years in health services. It was opened by
His Highness the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II on 21st
February, 1997 and commissioned by the retired Archbishop of the Church of
Uganda, the Most Rev.Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo on 22nd February
l997.
-
Again we are grateful to Friends of Mengo
Hospital U.K. for having contributed to the acquisition of the new Public Address System and the renovation of its set-up, with Ug.Shs.4,500,000.
This work was commissioned by the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese. The Rt.Rev.Samuel Balaggadde Ssekkadde on 18th
February, 2004. The total cost was approximately Ug.Shs.11,000,000=.
-
The Friends of Mengo Hospital U.K. are also
thanked for meeting some of the Chaplain’s salary demands.
-
All friends of Mengo Hospital over the World are also
appreciated for their support.
NEEDS
-
The workload is too heavy for the chaplain. We
would like more volunteers to assist in this calling, but with the consent of
the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese.
-
We do feel that ten (10) more loud speakers
should be added in other positions of the hospital premises for effective work
of the public address system.
Currently each cost Ug.Shs.250,000/=
-
It is also essential for the same public
address system to cater for the various announcements and health enlightments
within the hospital. Thus it requires another setup at the switchboard
including an amplifier plus cables. The current estimate is about
Ug.Shs.2,000,000.
-
We lack English Hymn books for worship. We
would prefer Mission Praise version – 100 copies. They are not available in
Uganda now.
Glory be to God Most High.
