ERNEST COOK X-RAY AND ULTRA SOUND DEPARTMENT

PROFILE

The department was named after Ernest Cook, the nephew of Albert Cook, who brought the first X-Ray machine to East Africa in 1907 and installed it at Mengo Hospital. The X-Ray department is located within the Sr. Albert Cook Building.

It has general X-ray fluoroscopy and Ultrasound facilities.

STAFFING

Staff include Dr. Micheal Kawooya Assoc. Prof. of Radiology and a Honorary Consultant to the hospital, Mrs. Ruth Nyende and Mr. Sam Mukembo who are radiographers, Mrs Gladys Mazinga-Sonographer Midwife and Miss Norah Nalule Registered Nurse. There are two radiography assistants.

Special X-ray procedures with fluoroscopy
General abdominal and obstetrical ultrasound
Small parts and colour Doppler ultrasound

TEACHING

The department houses ECUREI which is an affiliate teaching centre to Thomas Jefferson University Ultrasound Institute [JUREI] Philadelphia, USA, and part of the WHO region centre of excellence. ECUREI offers formal training in ultrasound for the ordinary and higher diploma in diagnostic ultrasound. CME courses in US are also offered by ECUREI.

RESEARCH

Clinical and operational research form part of the daily activities.

TRAINING

The next intake for ordinary and higher diploma in ultrasound is on 27 July 2003. Intake is twice a year in January and July. For information on ECUREI please visit the ECUREI

There are plans to introduce a diploma course in Radiography at ECUREI by 2004.

DEPARTMENTAL NEEDS

There is need to upgrade the department to world class status with CT and MRI and further streamline on activities by purchase of newer automatic film processor, X-ray bucky and mobile or portable machines. We welcome donations towards this. There is also need for more ultrasound machines to spread out the service to the antenatal wards.
There is need for a resident full time radiologist.

The department welcomes partnerships with other department in the world especially those based in missionary or Christian hospitals.
