CHILDREN’S ORTHOPAEDIC REHABILITATION UNIT (CORU)

1.  PROFILE

CORU (Children’s Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit) is one of the departments of Mengo Hospital working in the field of paediatric orthopaedics.  The main focus of the unit is children with physical disabilities.  Through its outreach programme, children from different parts of Uganda are seen and, where necessary, treated as well.  The unit is supported by the Christian Blind Missions International (CBM-I through funding of staff, surgical and non-surgical procedures, equipment and facilities.  The children treated through CBM-I are also financially supported in their treatment.

2.  STAFF MEMBERS

CORU is a well-established unit with staff members that are dedicated to their work.  There is a good teamwork amongst the staff.  The unit consists of 17 staff members.

3.  CORU SERVICES

•  The activities of CORU consist of the following:

•  Surgical treatment

• The outpatient clinic, held at Katelemwa Chesire Homes twice a week.

• Surgical outreach through the Community Based Rehabilitation projects in Kumiand Kisiizi

• Training for Surgeons, orthopaedic officers, nurses and physiotherapists (Paediatric Orthopaedic surgery and limb reconstruction training according to the lllizarov method.)

• Orginising training courses for the Uganda Clubfoot Project.

4.  EVENTS

• Visiting Canadian Orthopaedic surgeon for Uganda Clubfoot Project: September 2003 (1 week).

• Kumi surgical camp: September, October, December 2003 (1 week)

• Kisiizi surgical camp: November 2003 ( 1 week)

• Interface Uganda (Plastic surgery team from U.K.): October 2003  (1 week)

• Visiting Italian general surgeon; September 2003 ( 2 weeks)

• Visiting Italian orthopaedic surgeon: October 2003 (3 weeks)

• Visiting Canadian Orthopaedic surgeon: November 2003 (week)
